Music is about communication, creativity, and cooperation, and by studying music in schools, students have the opportunity to build on these skills, enrich their lives, and experience the world from a new perspective. – Bill Clinton
Hello, guys! So now, can you guess what I am going to present in this posting? Yes, some of you are correct 😀 From the title and the logo that I given above, it’s clearly explained about the topic that will be shown up. Well, we’re going to study English in another different way! This is the time for you to go to Youtube website and learn about English attractively through the music video and song lyrics. Is it fun, isn’t?
Lyrics Training. What is that exactly? Well, Lyrics Training is a free website for practicing languages through the use of You Tube music videos. Itʼs very easy to use and lots of fun. Basically, you watch a music video and type some or all of the lyrics to the song (depending on the level) line by line. This website is really impressed me since the first time I found it, because I really love music and I’m curious to know how this website works and impact our English learning.
Search for a song in the search bar or in the More Options menu. Alternatively, you can choose a song from the Recently Played section at the bottom of the page. You can choose songs from three levels of difficulty – easy, medium or hard.
This is what the More Options menu looks like. Great for teaching about music genres.
Click on English in this drop down to see English songs only, or use this menu to search for songs in other languages.
Click on the name of the song.
Choose a game mode (beginner, intermediate or expert) to start the game/quiz. Before you try the quiz, you might like to select ‘karaokeʼ. This will display all of the lyrics so you can read the lyrics as you listen to the song.
Itʼs very easy to use. Listen to the song and type the missing words. If you are a slow typist, donʼt worry, because the song will stop at the end of the line and wait for you. At the bottom, you can see how long the quiz has taken you, how many words you have completed, and how many words you have skipped. You also have the option to quit (ʻWithdrawʼ) or start again (ʻRestartʼ). The ʻHelpʼ menu shows the control keys.
At the end of the song, you will see your score. You can share your score with friends on Facebook or Twitter and there are also a number of ways that you can share the quiz with other people, including by e-mail or through various social networking sites.
The picture above is the screenshot of my result after singing My Love by Westlife (sorry I can’t sing I Lay My Love On You as the picture that I’ve taken before because it couldn’t be open in my region). Actually I could catch all the blank words in the lyrics and get the perfect points (780) 😀 But, as you can see I got the time penalty (-25%) because I finished it over the original duration of the song haha~
So far, there are several reasons for you to love this website. They are listed below :
- Itʼs free
- Itʼs fun
- No sign up necessary (unless you or your students want to keep a record of your scores)
- If you do sign up (which is easy and FREE) you can add your own content!
- Itʼs great for all levels. There are three levels of songs – easy, medium and hard – and each song has three levels of difficulty – beginner, intermediate and expert.
- Itʼs very interactive in that you have a lot of control over the pace of the activity. You can repeat lines, skip words, and there is also a ʻkaraokeʼ button which allows you read all of the lyrics as you listen to the song (and watch the video).
That’s all for my review. I’m not going to tease you any longer because I want to play it more 😀 And I think you have the same idea with me. Good luck, guys! Hope you enjoy the website ^_^
